Webinar - Strengthening Community Resilience with Innovative Health & Life Insurance
Despite significant advances in healthcare, around 50% of the global population still lacks Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This critical issue leads to approximately 100 million people pushed into poverty annually due to out-of-pocket health expenses. Financial barriers continue to hinder access to essential health services, particularly for vulnerable populations, leading to substantial health inequities. High medical costs deter individuals from seeking necessary treatment, often resulting in delayed care and increased mortality rates.
To combat these challenges, innovative solutions are essential. VisionFund Rwanda (VFR),a leading microfinance institution, has developed a “Savings Linked” insurance model in collaboration with SanlamAllianz. This model provides health coverage for World Vision Savings Groups and effectively integrates financial literacy training, digitised enrolment, and mobile money payments. These innovations reduce client acquisition and administration costs, enhancing the efficiency of processes and making healthcare more accessible.
On September 30th, SCBF hosted a webinar in collaboration with VisionFund International, VisionFund Rwanda, and SanlamAllianz to share experiences and insights from piloting, scaling, and replicating health and life insurance for savings groups across Africa, highlighting learnings from Rwanda, Malawi, and Ghana.
This session explores how innovative insurance solutions are strengthening community resilience. It dives into the health and life insurance products launched in Ghana and Malawi, and the key learnings from these countries that guided the introduction of similar solutions in Rwanda. The discussion covers the journey of designing, launching, and refining the insurance offerings in Rwanda, as well as the next steps for scaling these efforts not only in Rwanda but launching such solutions across other countries.
Some of the key take-aways from the webinar are:
- Educating and sensitising not only the clients but the internal staff regarding the solutions and its benefits, it is crucial for the success of the product and program
- Introducing relevant and simple products, collecting feedback regularly to improve and refine the solution to ensure the product remains relevant and appealing
