Roundtable Discussion - Financial Inclusion Innovations For Healthcare in a Changing Climate

Climate change is rapidly becoming a major global health challenge, with its impacts disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income populations. This is compounded by gaps in essential health services and rising catastrophic health expenditures. Innovations in financial inclusion can help these vulnerable groups access healthcare, protect their health, and adapt to climate-induced health risks.
The Swiss Capacity Building Facility (SCBF), with support from the UBS Optimus Foundation, recently released a report titled Financial Inclusion Innovations for Healthcare in a Changing Climate. The report explores the challenges and opportunities in improving healthcare access and reducing impoverishing health costs for low- and middle-income populations in the face of climate risks.
To further discuss the insights covered in this report, as well as the real-world applications around the globe, a roundtable discussion was organized on March 20, 2025, with industry experts. The agenda of the Roundtable Session addressed the link between climate and health, the state of global health financing, and innovations in financial inclusion aimed at helping climate-vulnerable populations access healthcare and safeguard their health. The session also examined the roles of various stakeholders, including the private sector and government agencies, in driving these solutions.
Key discussion points included:
· What are the most promising financial inclusion innovations for healthcare?
· What short and mid-term solutions can financial service providers, impact investors, and donors prioritize?
· How can stakeholders collaborate to expand the impact of innovative healthcare solutions?
