Webinar - Women, Technology, and Resilience in Zambia’s Financial Ecosystem

Over the past few years, digital financial services, particularly mobile money, have improved financial inclusion in Zambia. However, access remains limited in rural areas, and women are disproportionately excluded. To address this, MicroLoan Foundation Zambia developed Katumba, a free digital savings platform that offers an end-to-end solution to help financially excluded individuals, especially in rural areas, build a digital footprint through savings behavior and financial activity, enabling them to access formal financial products.
Against this backdrop, and in honor of International Women’s Day, on 6 March 2025, SCBF co-hosted a webinar in collaboration with MicroLoan Foundation. The session focused on the role of technology and financial inclusion in strengthening women's financial resilience in Zambia, particularly in the face of challenges such as droughts and economic exclusion. The discussion centered on the Katumba Savings Platform - a digital savings solution primarily designed for women living in extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. The webinar explored Katumba’s development, its impact on women’s financial resilience, and key lessons for shaping future financial solutions.
Some of the key-takeaways were:
· Role of digital solutions in reducing gender disparities in financial access.
· Insights into the challenges and successes of developing and implementing digital financial solutions in underserved communities.
· The impact of digital financial solutions on sustainable development in underserved communities, with a focus on the potential for scalability and replicability across different regions and contexts.
