Webinar - Pioneering Heat Index Insurance for Climate Exposed Workers & Farmers
The world is facing an undeniable reality: extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, with devastating effects on communities globally. This rising threat, particularly extreme heat, is no longer a future concern but a present-day challenge. The urgency of this situation has been underscored by the United Nations Secretary General’s recent Call to Action on Extreme Heat, which highlights the critical need for immediate solutions to protect vulnerable populations from the damaging impacts of rising temperatures.
Populations most affected by extreme heat live in low- and middle-income countries, where climate vulnerabilities intersect with deep-rooted economic and social inequalities. These regions, already grappling with poverty, limited resources, and access to basic services, are disproportionately impacted by the increasing frequency of heatwaves, droughts, and other climate-related disasters. In response to this, innovations in Heat Index Insurance have emerged as a promising solution. It helps mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat, and provide financial protection when temperatures reach dangerous thresholds. Heat Index Insurance can help low-income communities recover more quickly from climate shocks, allowing them to focus on restoring their health and livelihoods. However, implementing parametric insurance at scale comes with significant challenges. Distribution, affordability, and sustainability are critical hurdles that must be addressed to ensure the widespread adoption of Heat Index Insurance.
To address these critical issues, a recent webinar hosted by SCBF, in collaboration with CelsiusPro, BlueMarble, and project partner IBISA Network, explored innovations in Heat Index Insurance for women’s worker associations and dairy farmers.
This session delved into innovative insurance products in heat index designed to safeguard the livelihoods of low-income women and farmers, highlighting successful projects with women’s worker associations and dairy farmers.
